Douglas P. Galuk, MD

Douglas P. Galuk, MD, FAAOS - Wisconsin Rapids, WI - Black River Falls, WI

“I chose medicine because I’ve always been fascinated by anatomy and the mechanics of the human body. I grew up on a farm and enjoyed learning how to fix things with my hands. Orthopaedic surgery allowed me to combine my love of anatomy and mechanical repair in a truly exciting and gratifying way. Injuries and degenerative diseases happen to almost everyone. God has given me the opportunity to help many people in all walks of life, including the mission field.

“I very much enjoy patient interactions and seeing patients transition from pain and apprehension to restored function and confidence. It is impossible for me to separate my faith from how I practice. I strive to treat each patient as a child of God and to provide the best care possible, regardless of their status.

“My best quality as a practitioner is the joy I have in doing the job for which I was called by God to do. This joy brings energy and excitement to every facet of my day and even gives me strength as I work in the most rewarding job in the world!

“My primary interests lie in loving God with everything I have. I enjoy snow boarding, water sports, piloting small aircraft and serving Christ with my family on overseas missions.”

Todd J. Duellman, MD

Todd J. Duellman, MD, FAAOS - Wisconsin Rapids, WI - Black River Falls, WI“I try to employ the most innovative technology, including the latest minimally invasive techniques to facilitate better results and a faster recovery. My special interest in anterior hip replacement has led me to be an educator in this challenging minimally invasive technique. I literally have taught the anterior hip replacement surgical technique to hundreds of orthopaedic surgeons across the country.

“The uniqueness and challenges of sports- and work-related injuries directed me to further achieve an additional board certification in Orthopaedic Surgery – Sports Medicine.

“Together we can ‘Relieve your pain and restore your life!’”

Dr. Duellman enjoys spending time with his family, sports and outdoor activities. He is also a board member of the community YMCA and a former physical therapist.

Thomas Smedberg, MD, MS

Thomas Smedberg, MD, MS - Wisconsin Rapids, WI - Black River Falls, WI

“In high school I sustained a football injury that required the care of an orthopaedic surgeon. The surgeon provided me with excellent care and I have been fascinated by orthopaedics ever since. I enjoy the field of orthopaedics because it allows me to help people of all ages recover from various injuries and conditions so they can return to work, sports and the everyday activities they enjoy.

“I enjoy talking to patients, educating them about their conditions and treatment options and hearing about their goals for recovery. Typically, I prefer nonoperative treatment options and resort to surgical options only when they are absolutely necessary and in the patient’s best interests.

“Being a good listener allows me to diagnose a patient’s problem more easily and develop an effective treatment plan based on their unique needs. I always try to put myself in my patient’s shoes to better understand how an injury or condition personally affects them. Then, we work together to achieve the best possible results.”

Dr. Smedberg likes to follow college football and all kinds of outdoor sports and activities, including hunting and fishing.

Frank Walter, MD

Frank Walter, MD

“I was exposed to Orthopaedics as a teenager when I had two knee surgeries so that I could continue to play basketball and baseball in High School and eventually baseball in college. As a medical student I enjoyed working with patients to get them back to an active life. We all want to be active, to be able to walk, work, hunt, fish, golf, exercise, and enjoy these activities with as little pain as possible. Orthopaedics has given me the opportunity to help my patients maintain an active and healthy life.”

“I enjoy putting things back together. The human body is an amazing machine, but sometimes it breaks down or becomes injured. Rebuilding shoulders, repairing tears, fixing bones, and working around nerves is gratifying and humbling at the same time.”

“Probably the most enjoyable thing about Orthopaedics for me at this stage of my career is the happy smiles on my patient’s faces when they recover from their procedures and get back to the life they had before their injury.”

“I strive to involve my patients in the decision-making process as much as possible by spending time discussing their specific problem as it relates to their specific situation. I draw lots of pictures and use different analogies to explain to my patients what is wrong with their joint/body part. Then we talk about how to make it better. This doesn’t always involve surgery, thankfully.”

Dr. Walter likes to spend his free time with his wife and four kids, they keep him busy and active in golf, hiking, biking, working out, cooking and attending school and community events.

Why did you choose your field?
I love being able to help people and provide treatments that allow them to do the things that they want to do.

What about it did you find compelling?

What do you most enjoy about it now?
I enjoy be able to build relationships with my patients and watching them recover and return to the activities that they love.

How would you characterize your style of patient interaction or philosophy of care?
I believe in partnering with the patient. They are ultimately the ones that make their healthcare decisions and my goal is to discuss treatment options with them and come up with a plan of care that the patient agrees with.

What do you hope to give your patients?
My goal as a provider is to improve the quality of life for my patients, whether this is helping them recover from an injury or treating them for an ongoing medical problem.

What is your best quality as a practitioner?
Listening to my patients, educating them on the injury or medical condition, and collaborating on a treatment plan that meets their needs.

How does that help you in your job each day?

What are your personal interests and/or community involvements?
The most important thing in my life is my family and I cherish the time that I spend with them. We also love going to local sporting events and traveling with our daughters to their sporting tournaments on the weekends.
