Treatment for back and spine conditions

Affecting four out of five Americans, back pain is the most common and costly problem in orthopaedics. Too many people simply live with back pain and hope that it will resolve itself. Sometimes it does. But not when the pain is caused by degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis, disc herniation, spinal stenosis or a traumatic injury.

Common conditions such as herniated discs or pinched nerves caused by bone spurs may ultimately require surgery. In those cases, we perform minimally invasive procedures such as microdiscectomy for herniated disc, decompression for spinal stenosis and lumbar fusion for spondylolisthesis.

Nonsurgical treatment options

Some back pain will resolve itself in a week or two. If pain persists, we will recommend other nonsurgical treatments, including:

  • Limited rest – According to the New England Journal of Medicine, bed rest should be no more than two days. After that, specific exercise can strengthen back muscles and increase flexibility.

  • Exercise – This is the only way to strengthen back muscles, increase flexibility and help avoid future injury. Activity actually lubricates the spine.

  • Physical therapy and occupational therapy – Our onsite physical therapist and occupational therapy team can help increase your flexibility and strengthen the muscles that support the spine. We may use ultrasound, electrical stimulation, heat or ice, mobilization and exercise to reduce pain and facilitate movement.

  • Medication – To reduce swelling and pain, we may recommend medication depending on your symptoms and pain intensity.
