Orthopaedic Surgeon located in Wisconsin Rapids, WI

Thomas Smedberg, MD, MS, is an orthopaedic surgeon at Wisconsin River Orthopaedics, serving patients in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.

In high school, Dr. Smedberg sustained a football injury that required the care of an orthopaedic surgeon, who provided him with excellent care. Since then, he has been fascinated by orthopaedics. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Smedberg earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He then completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Medical College of Wisconsin affiliated hospitals and his fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at UHZ Sports Medicine Institute in Florida.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Wisconsin Orthopaedic Society, and Wisconsin Medical Society.

Dr. Smedberg enjoys talking to patients, educating them about their conditions and treatment options, and hearing about their goals for recovery. Typically, he prefers nonoperative treatment options and resorts to surgical interventions only when they are absolutely necessary and in the patient’s best interests. He enjoys the field of orthopaedics because it allows him to help people of all ages recover from various injuries and conditions so they can return to work, sports, and the everyday activities they enjoy.

Being a good listener allows Dr. Smedberg to diagnose a patient’s problem more easily and develop an effective treatment plan based on their unique needs. He always tries to put himself in his patient’s shoes to better understand how an injury or condition personally affects them and develop a treatment plan that yields the best possible results.

In his free time, Dr. Smedberg likes to follow college football and participate in all kinds of outdoor sports and activities, including hunting and fishing.
